ABSTRACT

Before embarking upon a journey we must choose a destination. Human society embraces over seven billion journeys, and each person has their own needs, aspirations and visions. No individual can determine the future of human society, although throughout history several have had major influences for a period, most with selfish, power-hungry goals and destructive impacts. If we are to nudge social, political and economic institutions towards the creation of a better world for the majority of humans and other species, the first step is to develop a vision, or visions, that many people can share. This chapter starts by offering a vision of an ecologically sustainable, socially just society, hereinafter called a ‘sustainable society’, for consideration and discussion.
