ABSTRACT
Land use planning processes for plan making and techniques for development control differ between countries and often within them. These differences can make it difficult for students and early career practitioners to grasp the underlying principles and techniques which should form the framework for learning about land use planning. Yet understanding the processes and operational techniques of land use planning is critical for implementing strategic spatial policy across all scales of urban governance and geography. Therefore this chapter provides an overview of land use planning, including a discussion of most common theories and methods, a summary of key arguments and rationales for justifying public intervention in the urban development process through land use regulation, and an articulation of normative principles to guide planners’ use of such interventions. It concludes with recommendations for literature and course design.
