ABSTRACT

Curbing irregular migration is an important agenda in the regulation of international migration. Focusing on Asia, this chapter discusses recent developments in migration governance to address irregularity. Among the different sub-regions in Asia, Southeast Asia has increasingly paid attention to formulating a regional approach to regulating migration, although discussions on irregular migration have been cautious and limited. The chapter argues for the need to consider approaches beyond crackdowns, registrations, amnesties and regularisations in fighting irregular migration. In rethinking new approaches, the need to dismantle exclusionary migration policies cannot be overemphasised.
