ABSTRACT

George’s mother died suddenly and unexpectedly. Life changed quickly and drastically for him. He was temporarily placed in several emergency shelters, and then placed in a group home. The home had a good reputation and the staff provided George competent residential service. Despite this good quality care, the staff were not equipped to give him the level of personal care that his mother previously provided. Instead, the residential program focused on teaching George to take care of his own personal needs. In the few years he lived in that home, George had to learn to brush his teeth, shave, comb his hair, and do all the other basic self-care activities of adulthood. He had to pack his lunch before leaving for work and help clear the table after dinner.
