ABSTRACT
There is no other EU institution that has changed its shape and functions as much as the European Parliament (EP). From a consultative assembly composed of representatives of national parliaments it has grown into a much larger institution, with 751 members (MEPs) directly elected by EU citizens and a complex internal organization. It now plays a crucial role when deciding on EU legislation, the budget as well as the appointment and accountability of other organs, particularly the Commission.
