ABSTRACT

Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001 (9/11), terrorism has become one of the major security threats. The fight against terrorism has, correspondingly, become a key priority for national governments and national security agencies, as well as an important part of the agenda of various international organizations, including the European Union (EU). As a consequence, there has been a proliferation of the academic literature analyzing various aspects of EU counter-terrorism efforts that already span across all of the EU’s former three pillars. In this chapter, only the key debates and findings that go beyond the academic ivory tower are presented.
