ABSTRACT

Latin America is the region in the world that has made most progress in terms of dealing with violations committed during past military rule or internal armed conflict through transitional justice mechanisms. This chapter maps the state of the art of transitional justice studies in the region, identifying the principle contributions of this field. The development of transitional justice studies varies across the region, as do the circumstances that gave rise to transitional justice measures. Here the authors identify different patterns according to countries and transition types. A final section signals emerging questions for the field of transitional justice studies in Latin America.
