ABSTRACT

Putting can be one of the most difficult and frustrating parts of the game of golf, yet when mastered, it can have a hugely positive impact on scoring and handicap. It is arguably the most important shot in a golfer’s repertoire, accounting for an estimated 40% of all strokes made during a round (Professional Golfers’ Association Tour Website, 2016). Despite the fact that it is the shortest and simplest swing that a golfer has to make, the requirements for precision and the binary nature of success and failure make putting the most interesting aspect of the game of golf from a psychomotor perspective. It is not surprising, therefore, that one of the most enduring adages in golf is that you ‘drive for show; but putt for dough’.
