ABSTRACT

That Latina/os are here in the U.S. to stay and are a major force (politically, economically, and socio-culturally) is by now a well-established fact. However, despite the obviousness of such a statement, representations of Latinidad in popular media forms are still limited. While figures such as Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Sofía Vergara, and Pitbull are now mainstream celebrities, they cater towards a more PG-13 audience than anything else. Latina/o representations for children are still severely limited almost exclusively to popular images such as Dora. But that is not to say that there are no bright spots in pop culture for Latinidad. One such example is Jorge Gutiérrez’s vibrantly animated movie, The Book of Life (2014).
