ABSTRACT
The history of Puerto Rican folktales, specifically Juan Bobo, presents a similar set of complicated issues, melding issues of folklore, anthropology, and narratology. But considered again, acknowledging a capitalist agenda, noting its sly positioning in American hegemonic culture, a re-reading of these characters’ episodic stories reveals something more repressive and subordinate lurking there under the guise of utopian equality.
