The media play a very important part in children’s lives. 1 Children watch television on traditional TV sets, look up video clips on YouTube, search things they need to do their homework through Google, play games on tablets or mobile phones and create profiles on (mini)social networks or virtual environments. Sometimes, children are the subject of reports by the press, in general as an important group in society, or in particular when something noteworthy happens to a specific child. Hence, as citizens with rights and responsibilities, children move seamlessly between different roles in the media environment: they are users, subjects and participants.
