ABSTRACT
In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders V (DSM-5; APA, 2013), malingering is defined as: ‘The intentional production of false or grossly exaggerated physical or psychological symptoms motivated by external incentives’ (p. 726). This psychiatric classification system does not provide specific criteria for malingering as it does not recognise malingering as a psychiatric disorder. The DSM-5 rather sees it as a ‘condition that may be the focus of clinical attention’ (pp. 726-727).
