ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to discuss how the fields of digital literacy, media literacy and information literacy have, or have not, developed in ways that address the needs of the community. The proliferation of information technologies and media of diverse kinds, and the convergence of previously disparate forms of communication such as computing, television and telephony, and genres such as news, entertainment and sport, give rise to opportunities and challenges for individual learners. However, the usage of these various media, and the impact on, and of, the literacy practices that have emerged around them, are just as significant at the community level (Harris 2008).
