When I (DPF) was asked to write a chapter on how to publish books and what steps one needs to take to “break into” book publishing, it did not strike me as a particularly interesting topic. But, if you want to publish a book in the field of psychology, then it is important to understand the best way to proceed. I actually find the process of writing a book and how that process affects the author to be a more interesting topic. Knowing how to secure a book contract and actually writing a book are two completely different experiences. Both will be addressed here because knowledge of the book writing experience itself will assist prospective authors in deciding whether or not publishing a book is something they truly wish to pursue. Specifically, this chapter will focus on (1) the steps that are necessary to secure a book contract in the field of psychology and (2) how the process of writing and publishing books affects authors in both positive and negative ways.
