ABSTRACT
Censorship, the impulse to censor, and the ideology supporting it go back to ancient times; every society has had and continues to have laws, customs and taboos that regulate how its members should talk, dress, practise religion and express their sexual behaviour. Censorship can be justified on moral, political, military, religious or corporate grounds, and is not limited to dictatorships; rather, it is also present in most liberal democracies.
