ABSTRACT

Due to the significant public health issue caused by sexual offending, the topic is one of public and professional interest in terms of the prevention of sexual offending behaviour, as well as the treatment and management of those individuals who commit sexual offences. Although sexual offending recidivism is lower compared to other serious crimes such as violent crime, the harm caused by it warrants investment in efforts to address it. Within this chapter we will consider current practice in the delivery of interventions designed to address sexual offending risk amongst those convicted of sexual offences. Most of the research related to interventions for sexual offending focuses on adult males and much more has been tested and evaluated and therefore this chapter will focus on interventions for adult males convicted of sexual offences; the treatment of sexual offending behaviour by young people and women is covered elsewhere in this handbook.
