ABSTRACT

The present chapter is intended to provide the reader with an overview of what is known about the development of sexual aggression. It is not a complete review of the literature, but rather a discussion of essential phenomena and relevant empirical evidence relating to the development of sexual aggression in the context of a theoretical framework presented here for the first time. In following a developmental approach, we intend to provide the reader with an account of the onset and course of sexual aggression through the life span, including desistance; we intend to provide an account of milestones in the developmental sequence when critical determining factors or events increase or decrease the likelihood of sexual aggression.
