ABSTRACT

In March 2016, the UK media reported the conviction of a woman for murdering her husband, under headlines such as “‘Bullying bride’ given life for murdering solicitor husband” ( Daily Telegraph, UK: 8 March 2016): there had been a history of violence by the wife, culminating in the husband’s death by stabbing. Such cases tend to be highlighted in the media in countries such as the United Kingdom because they go against the stereotype of the non-violent woman, and also because successful advocacy, by women’s groups, journalists and academics, has resulted in general acceptance of the view that it is predominantly men who are perpetrators and women who are victims of violence to partners.
