ABSTRACT

The term ‘alterophobia’ is not a familiar one to many and is, in fact, a neologism, having no entry at the time of writing (October 2017) in the Oxford English Dictionary, although it has been used online, in its current sense, with increasing frequency since 2011. A research definition of the term that I have made elsewhere (see Minton, 2012a: 87) is:

Prejudice directed towards members of alternative subcultures, including those who are, or are perceived as being, goths, punks, emos, skaters and fans of heavy metal, and those who listen to any type of alternative music.
