ABSTRACT
This statement is a near-cliché, even if many historians of colonialism remain reluctant to take gender to heart. As a result of women’s and gender studies, postcolonial and subaltern writing, and ‘new’ social history, creative research questions concerning the functioning of gender and prescribing roles for women and men have sharpened our understanding of empire.
