ABSTRACT
The twentieth century began with the Europeans at their possessive peak, confident in their power and in their wealth. But their supremacy was far from stable, always vulnerable to indigenous resistance, to intra-European strife and to economic unpredictability. By the end of the twentieth century, Europe’s political and economic supremacy would be successfully challenged and its colonial era all but over.
