ABSTRACT

Air Forces Monthly magazine, the self-proclaimed ‘world’s number one military aviation magazine’, included in its September 2010 issue a one-page report on the RAF Waddington International Airshow which had taken place on 3-4 July. Beginning with a comment about the reporter’s enjoyment of the event – ‘It has such a friendly feeling about it’ (Warnes, 2010: 76) – the article went on to detail a number of the key attractions available to visitors, including flying displays from a Vulcan bomber, a Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon, and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The reporter concluded that ‘if you want a show that you can take your kids to without it costing the earth to keep them entertained, then head for RAF Waddington’ (Warnes, 2010: 76).
