ABSTRACT
In 1837, Theodore Weld, a revivalist minister and abolitionist, wrote a letter to his wife and sister describing his methods for changing hearts and minds on the issue of slavery: “[I]f it is not felt in the very vital tissues of the spirit, all the reasoning in the world is a feather thrown against the wind.” 1
