ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I explore the relationship between technology, space and sexuality within the context of Western culture – a culture that is increasingly experienced as digitally immersive. I shall draw upon two specific examples from contemporary digital culture to examine aspects of this relationship. Both examples are mobile applications that serve to remap space. The first example demonstrates the ways in which technology can be used to ‘open up’ public space by creating sexual networks, while the second illustrates the ways in which technology can be deployed as a method of ‘closing down’ and regulating our use of public spaces. These examples allow me to explore the ways in which digital technology can serve to regulate and shape the spaces of our everyday lives, and the role that sexual discourses play within these shaping practices.
