ABSTRACT

I am interested in and currently researching why black women of African and Caribbean heritage appear to delay disclosure and or seek help in the aftermath of violence. This chapter will review the literature on seeking and receiving help for black women. The knowledge base on black women in the UK is very limited. Therefore findings from studies that have been carried out in the USA will be used to pinpoint possible gaps in what we know here in the UK. Many of the studies cited are small and qualitative and raise issues that require further exploration. The chapter is organised through a set of key themes that offer possible explanations for why black women may delay help seeking or choose not to disclose.
