ABSTRACT
The importance of the small volume published in modest numbers in 1889 for the first time was already foreseeable in 1900, when Camillo Sitte wrote the preface to the third edition. What Sitte – a Viennese teacher, journalist, and architect – could not yet see was the impact that his book would have on city planning in the twentieth century, particularly in English-speaking countries.
