ABSTRACT

With a population of approximately eight million, New York City remains America’s largest city, more than twice the size of Los Angeles, the next-biggest. Home to Wall Street, Broadway, Woody Allen, Jay-Z, and baseball’s Yankees, the Big Apple looms larger-than-life in the country’s imagination. While Americans in other parts of the country can be dismissive or critical of New York, they can also embrace it as their own, as many did following the 9/11 attack in 2001.
