Living Hand-to-mouth: Regulating and Funding Religious Heritage in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom consists of four jurisdictions – England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales – and two of them have Churches ‘established by law’: the Church of England and the Church of Scotland. Responsibility for historic buildings is a devolved matter, with the result that there are four territorial executive agencies responsible for historic buildings: English Heritage, Historic Scotland, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and, in Wales, Cadw.2
