ABSTRACT
This chapter examines two flexible terms – ‘culture’ and ‘defence’ – that must be understood within a specific context. From the outset, it may seem strange to examine these concepts together. However, knowledge of a country’s culture is integral to defence, as becomes apparent when recalling situations in which lack of cultural knowledge, such as the history or economics of a country, was the first obstacle faced. Nevertheless, it is necessary to consider the scope of these terms first.
