ABSTRACT

Architecture and anthropology, sociology or geography make strategic combinations of disciplines in studying urbanization in Southeast Asia as they allow for sharper analyses on the interconnectedness of the built urban form and societal dynamics that provide the urban fabric. There are at least three approaches to analyze the social production of the urban fabric. First is by analyzing the evolving morphology of the city through history, such as demonstrated by Johannes Widodo in his study of coastal cities in Southeast Asia. All physical changes in the urban morphology can be attributed to changing social and political developments in the region.
