ABSTRACT

This article examines contemporary language maintenance and revitalization efforts amongst Tibetans in China. We provide a case study of Hualong County, on the northeast Tibetan Plateau, looking at local linguistic diversity, and the historical and policy contexts that have led to the endangerment of the local variety of Tibetan in Hualong. We examine contemporary language revitalization efforts through a discussion of institutions, organizations, language brokers, and language activists. Our exploration of these issues shows that although language revitalization literature developed from case studies in European and New World settler colonial contexts was helpful, its applicability was limited due to significant differences in both cultural and political contexts in China.
