ABSTRACT

Words and word choice are the most salient aspects of language for many people, so dictionaries can play a key role in language revalorization and revitalization. But dictionaries for endangered languages pose special problems in lexicography, due to the nature of documentary corpora and lexicographic resources and traditions. And for language revitalization, dictionaries have a high bar—they need to help people use a language, rather than simply understanding it. In this chapter, I discuss some of the key problems and explore possible solutions.
