ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Joan Turner and Victoria Dempsey qualitatively explore the health literacy of preschoolers under the developmentally oriented and watchful eye of their teacher, as they playfully investigate and begin to make sense of their bodies, the ways in which the various parts function, and the abstract concepts of health and illness. Clinical examples highlight the ways in which the play setting provides a naturalistic environment for children to demonstrate their competence with health-related themes and reveal behaviors children have previously engaged in, or seen adults engage in, supported through interactions with peers.
