ABSTRACT

International security institutions finally seem to be in agreement regarding the importance of including women during peace processes. The United Nations has formally affirmed that the inclusion of women in peace processes is generally good for peace. Former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, stated that having women at the table improves the quality of agreements and their implementation (UN 2009). UN Women also cites new research on how women specifically make for more ‘peaceful’ outcomes:

[P]eace processes that included women as witnesses, signatories, mediators, and/or negotiators demonstrated a 20% increase in the probability of a peace agreement lasting at least two years. This increases over time, with a 35% increase in the probability of a peace agreement lasting 15 years.
