ABSTRACT

92 93 Community colleges are an innovation born of twentieth century American ingenuity and enroll 56% of Latino and 42% of all undergraduates in the United States (College Board, 2016). This chapter reflects on the mission of community colleges and spotlights what it means to be a culturally responsive leader within a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) community college. To understand what attributes are needed by leaders at an HSI community college, it is imperative to briefly review the history of the community college, to explore how and why HSIs came into being, and to consider the characteristics of the students and the challenges related to their success in college.
