ABSTRACT

Integrated cognitive-behavioral therapy (ICBT) is an evidence-based, integrated treatment that addresses co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD). This intervention is designed to be safe and acceptable to clients, as well as easily implemented by clinicians in real-world addiction treatment settings. ICBT is “integrated” as it addresses PTSD, substance-related symptoms, and their interaction within the same therapy course while being delivered by one clinician. Thus far, we have conducted one open-label pilot and two randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of ICBT among clients with co-occurring PTSD and SUD. In this chapter, we provide an overview of ICBT, review its evidence to date, and present a case study. We also describe an adaptation of ICBT for military veterans and summarize the future directions of research on ICBT.
