ABSTRACT
The Normal School in Toronto was very much the product of a teacher-training movement with ties reaching far beyond Ontario, and even North America, to Western Europe. But inevitably it was also a product of a particular place. Both as an educational and as a social institution, it was modelled by, reflected and ultimately exerted a powerful influence on the culture of schooling in Toronto and across the province. 1
