ABSTRACT
Sign language can be used to help deaf learners develop reading skills. This chapter reviews studies that provide international perspectives on how deaf learners use their sign language to read print during the reading process. It proffers a description of selected reading theories related to deaf learners, sign language, and reading. Examples of sign-print bilingual instructional strategies are provided. Suggestions for future directions in research and practice are discussed.
