ABSTRACT
Although the field of linguistics has focused mainly on spoken aspects of communication, language invariably involves both speech and bodily action in order to express ideas, intentions, attitudes, emphasis, and to manage interactions. Expressive actions with the hands and face are an integral part of spoken discourse, and increasing evidence suggests that gesture – the intentionally communicative actions that are part of spoken utterances – are integral to speech, thought, social interaction and cultural practices.
