ABSTRACT

This chapter will not be a detailed taxonomy of the many vowel harmony (hereafter: VH) processes found in African languages with extensive collections of examples, but rather a typologically oriented and theory-driven overview of possible harmony types, be they common or rare, that bear upon the question: “What is the range of VH systems in African languages?” (For an overview of all harmony processes in all natural languages, see Krämer (2003) and Rose & Walker (2011).)
