ABSTRACT

There is considerable controversy in the transgender community about the importance of “passing”, i.e., being seen consistently as one’s affirmed gender. At one time, it was the stated goal of nearly everyone who identified as transsexual (the applicable term at the time). A new generation of gender-variant individuals is challenging that assumption. For some, expressing themselves and being seen as gender non-conforming is preferable to moving from one “box” (binary identity) to the other.
