ABSTRACT

The consequences of poor mental health are profound. They go way beyond the need for healthcare services. Indeed, what makes poor mental health almost unique is the broad impact it can have on all aspects of life including physical health, family relationships, access to housing and employment, and risk of contact with the criminal justice system. The high levels of public stigma and ignorance associated with mental health problems exacerbate matters, while discrimination increases the likelihood that individuals will become socially excluded.
