ABSTRACT

Almost two decades into the twenty-first century and we still live in an age of severe energy poverty and pervasive energy injustice. Although the established global energy system has catalyzed economic wealth and social development for some, it has significantly contributed to the climate crisis and has adversely affected the most vulnerable, who have not benefited from the energy boom. Considering that the energy sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions globally, 1 “climate change makes the most persuasive case for a justice framing.” 2 Thus, global energy security and energy access are some of the central environmental justice issues of our times, with implications for numerous fundamental human rights.
