ABSTRACT

An international body of research from such diverse academic and professional specialties as geography, environmental gerontology, occupational therapy, urban planning and architecture finds that older people prefer to age in place or stay put in their current residential settings rather than to move or migrate to another destination. These studies, mainly from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden, China, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia and Taiwan, also show that compared to younger people, ageing adults, especially homeowners, remain occupants of their current dwellings for much longer durations (Vasunilashorn et al., 2012).
