ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates how mobile outreach seating clinics, run by trained seating practitioners, can increase the access of children with posture support needs to assistive equipment and holistic services close to where they live. They share internal reflections of Shonaquip’s holistic model of service delivery which has evolved over 25 years’ experience in diverse contexts and communities across South Africa. In this chapter, an appropriate wheelchair is widely recognised to be a fundamental right and an important pre-requisite for participation, health and well-being of a person with mobility impairment. When accompanied by sustainable seating services, and supported by empowered parents, skilled carers, and a disability-aware community, the authors argue that each child is better placed to develop, learn and flourish as a valued member of their community.
