ABSTRACT

This chapter explores options of self-employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable development among disabled people, drawing examples from southern African countries. It further examines the roles of the governments, educational institutions, vocational and industrial institutions. Environmental, socio-economic, personal and family factors that impact disabled people’s welfare and social lives are taken into consideration. The chapter further discusses various challenges that disabled people face, thereby exposing them to employment and social discrimination. It argues that with proper planning and government support, the process of consumer empowerment and the impact of the entrepreneurship programmes on the lives of disabled people can benefit the country and individuals involved.
