The living systems theory of vocational behaviour and development (LSVD) explains how individuals construct their vocational pathways and career patterns. Understanding behaviour episodes (BEs) as the fundamental, person-in-context units of analysis is shown to be essential for individuals’ understanding of their developmental career history, as well as for constructing their future career pathways. A case example is presented to show how the LSVD can guide counsellors in an individual person-centred approach to assist their clients in creating satisfying career pathways. Researchers are encouraged to use non-linear, person-centred, quantitative and qualitative methods to analyse BE patterns and career pathways.
