ABSTRACT

As the formal organisation of elite sport continues to increase around the world, leadership is one of the most impactful factors for all of those operating across the domain. Indeed, the ways in which all groups function can be linked to the perceptions, intentions, and actions of those with responsibility for leading them (e.g., Sam, 2012). These leaders can be of both the formal variety (e.g. CEOs, performance directors, head coaches, academy managers, heads of sports science and medicine, team captains) and of the more informal variety (e.g. specialist coaches, expert practitioners, individuals who link different sub-groups together, influential parents). These leaders can also shape how their group operates through both the presence and absence of their perceptions, intentions, and actions (i.e. what is not said or done can be equally impactful as what is said and done). In short, what leaders feel, think, and do matters a lot for everyone!
