ABSTRACT

Hillary Clinton titled her book on children, It Takes A Village (2006), drawing on an old adage she quoted on a number of occasions, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The message was clear. Children (and teens) are part of what makes for a village and are both our present and our future. Children (and teens, understood) are also among the most vulnerable members of this village. Chicago just delivered some horrific numbers. Often they were innocent victims of gang activity. Others were drive-by. The majority of them were intraracial. In the same period over 200 children were seriously wounded in similar situations. What can parents and grandparents do? How do we prepare the children?
