ABSTRACT

This chapter is to position the approaches to teaching literature at the secondary school level in Malaysia. Using document analysis and guided by the four approaches to teaching literature proposed by Choo (2013), this study reveals that only the elective Literature in English subject for the SPM level or ‘O’ Level articulates elements of Cosmopolitan approaches, while the elective Literature in English subject and the Literature component in English Language syllabus at the secondary level is associated with Nationalistic approaches. The study reveals that there is a need for more detailed official documents for teachers and students.
